Some of the best ladies golfers in the world have returned to the Upper Peninsula this week for the Symetra Tour's Road to the LPGA at the Sweetgrass Golf Course in Harris.
There are 144 golfers entered in the 54-hole event, which runs Friday-Sunday.

The Escanaba Polecats fell behind 3-0 early on in Wednesday's Wishigan League game against the Felch Rangers, and the Dickinson County team didn't even hit the ball out of the infield. Four errors hurt the Polecats as they eventually fell behind, 5-0, and lost, 8-5, at Al Ness Field. Click the above headline to read details, see pictures, and a couple of videos from the game.
The Escanaba Polecats rallied from two runs down and beat the Ishpeming-Marquette-Negaunee North Stars, 4-3, in Wishigan Men's League baseball Wednesday night at Al Ness Field. Team Coach Jon Bintner got the game-winning hit and also pitched the final three innings in relief of starting pitcher Josh Brodersen.
The LPGA Futures Tour returns to the Upper Peninsula in late June, with some of the world's best lady golfers comping to compete for money...and a possible spot on the main LPGA Tour next year. There will be 150 golfers representing at least 30 countries at the Island Resort and Casino Championship, which will be held June 29th through July 1st at the Sweetgrass Golf Course in Harris.

There's a new team in town.
The Escanaba Rollin' Hellcats Women's Roller Derby team played at the Wells Sports Complex over the weekend, before a packed crowd of more than 500. The Esky ladies lost their game to the Kingsford Krush, 180-60, but it was a fun night for everyone involved. The Hellcats practice at a small venue near Escanaba Public Safety, but this was their first actual competition.
The Michigan Tech Huskies were less than five minutes away from their first WCHA Final Five win in more than 15 years before ninth-ranked Denver turned the tables and came away with a 3-2 overtime victory in front of 11,489 fans in St. Paul, Minn., Thursday. The Huskies led, 2-1, before DU's Luke Salazar scored, sending the game to overtime. Then, 2:38 into the extra session, Denver’s Jason Zucker scored the game-winner.
The 74th annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament is being held this weekend in the small Menominee County town of Hermansville. The tournament began Thursday night with four games, and five more games were held Friday.
