Marie, Ontario is pleased to announce that LSSU’s NCAA Division I men’s hockey team will host the 2nd Superior Ice Showdown on January 23, 2026. This year’s event will include a Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular season game against University of St. Thomas Tommies at the GFL Memorial Gardens. A week full of nostalgia and celebration wrapped up Saturday night at Northern Michigan University as the 1975 national championship football team was honored. The highlight was the retirement of Steve Mariucci's jersey, the Iron Mountain native who was the quarterback of that team and went on to play and coach in the NFL. It was a full afternoon of college soccer on Sunday in Marquette, as the Northern Michigan University men's and women's teams both played at the NMU Soccer Field. For the second consecutive week, the Michigan Tech football team spoiled Homecoming for the opposition. This time, the Huskies won a 16-14 defensive road battle at Davenport on Saturday afternoon. The Gladstone High School football team fell behind the Houghton Gremlins, 14-0, but rallied to post a 34-22 win Friday night at the Marble Athletic Field. A 41-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass from Vinny Rebholz to Aiden Burie on the last play of the second quarter turned the game around, giving the Braves their first lead and Gladstone dominated from there. The Northern Michigan University men's soccer team took down the reigning GLIAC Champions and 2024 NCAA Elite Eight team 1-0 Friday afternoon in Marquette. The Wildcats (4-2-3, 3-2-0 GLIAC) took a full three points off of the No. 17 Cardinals (5-1-3, 4-1-0 GLIAC), something no team this season has yet been able to do. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association has announced its Players of the Week on Monday and NMU's William Gramme earned the Goaltender of the Week award. Gramme, earning his first CCHA Goaltender of the Week honor, posted a .947 save percentage over the weekend, stopping 107-of-113 shots for the Wildcats in a season-opening series at No. 15 Massachusetts. After the first weekend of play: Gramme leads the nation in saves (107), and his .947 SV% is an NCAA best among goalies who have faced 69+ shots. (NMU story, photo)
In a marathon contest lasting more than three and a half hours, the Northern Michigan football team fell 47-25 to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at Wickes Stadium. Though the Wildcats outscored SVSU 22-14 in the second half, a 26-point second quarter from the home team proved too much to overcome. NMU found the end zone three times, but it was not enough.
The Escanaba High School Gym was full of spikes and digs on Saturday as the annual Elks Invitational was held on a hot, humid day. Ten teams played four pool matches, and the top four teams advanced to the semifinals. The Menominee High School football team scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back Friday night, blowing out the Gladstone Braves, 61-6, on Maroons Homecoming at Blesch Stadium. Senior quarterback Tanner Theuerkauf threw three touchdown passes, all of them to fellow senior Landen Daigneau, to help the Maroons jump to a 27-0 lead before the first quarter was over.

The Northern Michigan volleyball team picked up its third straight victory, and first on the road this season, by outlasting Saginaw Valley State in a five-set battle on Friday night. West Iron County is used to competing for Upper Peninsula tennis titles. Going into Wednesday’s Division 2 Finals, the Wykons had finished first or second 31 times at the season-concluding event. The Wykons won their 14th championship after finishing runner-up three of the previous four years. They won five of the eight flights in Kingsford to finish ahead of Norway, which won the other three flights, and Ishpeming. Both finished five points behind West Iron, tied for second place. Another Upper Peninsula high school football team has forfeited a game because of a lack of healthy boys to field a team. The Westwood Patriots announced on Wednesday that it will not be able to play the Negaunee Miners this Friday night. The game was going to be Negaunee's homecoming game.
The NMU men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the defending GLIAC champions, the Roosevelt Lakers, Sunday in suburban Chicago. The Wildcats (2-2-3, 1-2-0 GLIAC) lost its first game on the road this season, as they found themselves in the midst of a physical game. The teams combined for 37 fouls and eight yellow cards, with seven of the bookings going against the Wildcats.
Bay Cross Country Team travelled to the MCCAA Northern Conference Meet hosted by North Central Michigan College. Bay's Women's Team put two runners in the All-Conference as well as All-Freshman Team while the Men's Team had three runners qualify for All-Conference and one runner as All-Freshman.
Owen Gereau scored four touchdowns and Trevor Thorbahn added two scores as the Gladstone Braves overcame a great first half by Westwood quarterback Ethan Marta to beat the Patriots, 59-22, Friday night, at Westwood High School.
It was quite the home opener for the Northern Michigan volleyball team on Friday night, as the Wildcats (2-9, 1-2) rallied to hand the Parkside Rangers (9-1, 2-1) their first loss of the season, 26-24, 17-25, 13-25, 25-21, 15-7.
The Negaunee High School girls tennis team won the Mid Peninsula Conference championship on Thursday. The Miners had 44 points, with Westwood second at 36 points. Negaunee won six of the eight championship flights: Lili Saunders, Rheana Nelson, and Addi Chapman in singles. The doubles teams of Nicole Kerkela and Clare O'Donnell; Olivia Richards and Sadie Rogers; and Paige O'Donnell and Maia Brunette also won championships. Ishpeming (20 points) finished third on the team scoreboard. Norway (14 points) was fourth and Iron Mountain (4 points) finished fifth.
A ceremony was held Tuesday night to celebrate the brand new bleachers at the Escanaba football stadium. The Eskymo Fan Club spearheaded the $450,000 project, which stripped out all of the old wooden seats and replaced them with new metal seats. They also put in 156 “stadium seats”.
The Bay College Norse volleyball team found itself in a close battle all night long as they pulled off a 3-2 victory over the Delta College Pioneers Monday night. The Norse took the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 28-26 before dropping the next two (26-28 and 20-25). They were able to come through in the end with a 15-9 win in the final set.
The Northern Michigan football team picked up right where they left off last week against St. Tomas, finding themselves in a back-and-forth game with GLIAC foe Davenport University on Saturday. Northern jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before Davenport answered, making the score 7-3. NMU briefly reclaimed the lead with Noah Dobert's first touchdown of the afternoon. Ultimately, Davenport's explosive second half proved to be too much for the Wildcats, as the Panthers won 35-16.
Saturday was not Michigan Tech football's day as the No. 24 nationally-ranked Huskies fell to Upper Iowa 21-14 in front of almost 2,800 fans at Kearly Stadium for Homecoming. Michigan Tech (3-1) saw the defense record three turnovers and a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, but six penalties for 70 yards and a 21-point outburst in the second quarter by Upper Iowa (2-1) proved to be too much to overcome.

In a fast paced first half, the Wildcats opened the scoring after Luca Rosen converted on a penalty kick just nine minutes into the contest. It was NMU's only goal of the game.
