GLADSTONE---The Gladstone High School football team fell behind the Houghton Gremlins, 14-0, but rallied to post a 34-22 win Friday night at the Marble Athletic Field. A 41-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass from Vinny Rebholz to Aiden Burie on the last play of the second quarter turned the game around, giving the Braves their first lead and Gladstone dominated from there.
The Gremlins (2-5) got off to a great start behind MIchigan Tech University recruit Brayden Goudge. The senior intercepted a Rebholz pass and returned it 37 yards for a pick-six touchdown, and then moments later, Goudge broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run up the middle of the field, and the Gremlins had a 14-0 lead.
Gladstone's defense continued to gain control of the game, and the Braves got closer when Trevor Thorbahn broke off a 40-yard touchdown run. The two-point run was no good, so Houghton maintained a 14-12 lead late in the second quarter. The Gremlins punted on their next posession, so Gladstone offense had one last chance before halftime.
Gladstone ran three plays to get to the Houghton 41 yard-line. With two seconds left on the clock, Rebholz set up to throw. The Gremlins did not rush him, setting up for the defense of a pass. But that didn't work. Rebholz found Burie at the goal line in between two defenders. Burie hauled it in for a game-changing touchdown pass after the halftime horn sounded. Ingrham's extra point kick gave Gladstone a 19-14 halftime lead.
Houghton received the second half kickoff, but could not do much with the ball. When the Braves got it back, fhey punched it into the end zone as Thorbahn scored his second touchdown of the game, this time, from eleven yards out. Thorbahn also scored the two-point conversion run, giving Gladstone a 27-14 lead with 6:49 left in the third quarter.
The Gremlins could not move the ball, and on 4th and 1, fumbled on their own 32-yard line. Morgun Lynch recovered for Gladstone, and six plays later, Rebholz found Mason Serpien for a six-yard touchdown pass. Inghram's extra point kick gave Gladstone a 34-14 lead.
