ALPENA---
The Bay College Norse women's basketball team had a trip from Hell on Wednesday as it traveled to Alpena to face the ACC Lumberjacks.

The team bus got stuck in a white out on US-2, about 15 miles from the Mackinac Bridge, and didn't move for more than two hours. The team eventually made it to Alpena, but a 5:30 game became a 7:30 tip-off.

Once they got on the court, the Norse poured it on, racing to a 28-6 lead after the first quarter and cruising to a 90-29 win to improve to 10-8 on the season (3-1 MCCAA).

“Mother Nature helped to create some adversity for us,” first-year Norse Coach James Fassett said. “But once we got here, we are kind of a shooting team, and the percentages haven't been great lately, so we got to work. We've just to build each game. Each game, I want the kids to each pick one thing that they want to do better than the last game. I think we can get better incrementally.”

Anna Axtell led the Norse again, with another double-double. Axtell threw down 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and she collected five steals on defense.

Kennedy Sproule also had a double-double (16 points, ten rebounds, three blocked shots), and Lauren Zawada chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds, and had five steals.

McKenzie Hoffmeyer came off the bench to add 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting, and she had a team-high six steals as the Norse defense forced the Lumberjacks into 35 turnovers. Just not in the usual way.

“Normally, we're a full-court pressing team,” Fassett said. “But I decided today, let's really work our half-court defense, and really get back into the passing lanes. Get back to fundamental basketball. And then, they played a lot of zone, so just working our zone offense.”

The Lumberjacks fell to 2-10 overall, 1-3 in MCCAA play. They were led by Jena Warnbold, who scored six points. Saige Flaugher had five points and eight rebounds.

Bay College (10-8, 3-1) will be on the road again this weekend to Saginaw to face the Delta College Pioneers. Delta was beaten by Mid Michigan, 137-46, Wednesday night in Mt. Pleasant.

Delta is 5-11 overall, 2-2 in the league. Game time in University Center is set for 1:00 Saturday and you can tune in on Maverick 106.3 FM.
