American Legion State Tournament Starts Thursday

MARQUETTE----The American Legion Baseball Tier II State Tournament will be held in Marquette this week. There are six teams in the field....with defending champion Hudson being the only one from below the Mackinac Bridge.

The Escanaba Cubs enter as the Upper Peninsula champions, following last weekend's tournament championship in Sault Ste. Marie. Kingsford was the runner-up, with the Gladstone Indians, Menominee Red Wave, and the host Marquette Blues also making it.

These games are all nine-inning games, just like they were in the Sault last weekend. But unlike the Tier I tournament downstate, the champion of this state tournament does not have the opportunity to advance to Regional or World Series play.

As for radio coverage, the Escanaba Cubs and Gladstone Indians games will not be broadcast as they normally would be. That's because of coverage of the Little League Junior Girls Regional Tournament in Akron, Ohio, and of the Little League Junior Boys Regional Tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Throughout the tournament, however, we will post updates on this web site.
