Eskymos Outlast Braves In Volleyball Rivalry Match

ESCANABA---Homecoming Week got off to a good for the Escanaba Eskymos as the girls volleyball team beat Gladstone Tuesday night.  But it didn't start off so well.

The Eskymos were beaten badly in the first game of their match with the Braves, but rallied to pull out a 3-2 Great Northern Conference win at the Escanaba High School Gym.

Gladstone won the first game, 25-15, before the Eskymos regrouped to win the next two games, 25-17 and 25-15. With the chance to put the match away, however, the Eskymos couldn't take the fourth game, as Gladstone prevailed, 25-18.

That set up a decisive fifth game, and the Eskymos earned a 15-9 win to take the match.

Holly Ettenhofer had seven kills, 14 assists, four service aces, and 16 digs to lead the Eskymos. Kathy Wellman had five digs, two blocks, and six kills.

Sydney Gafner contributed eight kills, and Ashley Cook had a team-high 23 digs for Escanaba.

Escanaba improved to 7-17-4 in match play this season. Gladstone fell to 3-24-2. The Eskymos travel to Kingsford next Tuesday while the Braves will host Marquette.
