Eskymos, Braves Lose Finale; Playoffs Start Monday

ESCANABA---The high school girls volleyball season didn't end the way the Escanaba Eskymos wanted it to Thursday night.

But despite a 3-0 loss to the tall Stephenson Eagles, the Eskymos know that in four short days, the "second season" will begin: districts.

The Eskymos honored their four seniors Thursday night, but were overwhelmed by the Eagles by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-16.

Seniors Ashley Langtange, Alliyah Edwards, Holly Ettenhofer, and Kathryn Wellman were given placques, a flower, and a hug from an emotional Coach Bron Harmon during a pre-game ceremony.

Escanaba finished the regular season with a 7-20-4 record in match play.

BRAVES LOSE FINALE---Gladstone dropped its last regular season match of the season, falling to the Kingsford Flivvers, 3-1, in Kingsford.

The scores were 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, and 12-25.

"The match started off with excellent offense and strong defense on both sides," Gladstone Coach Liz Gendron said.  "I asked the girls tonight to play a smarter game, try to anticipate and 'read the court' rather than just going through the motions.  They did it well for the most part. We really came unglued in the fourth set, though."

Jessica Beaudry had nine kills and Lexi Hongisto had eight kills to lead the Braves. On defense, Callie Jensen had 17 digs and Grace Zimmerman was credited with 11 digs.

Gendron's team finished the regular season with a 5-28-2 match record. But she says she is happy to see that her girls have not given up, and are still playing hard.

"Overall, this young team has come a long way," Gendron said. "We are in a good position going into post season to make a few upsets."

The post-season starts Monday night with a Class B District Semifinal game between the Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves. The match starts at 7:00 in Gladstone.
