ESCANABA----The Gladstone Braves won the championship of the Escanaba Elks Wrestling Invitational on Saturday in Escanaba. In all, there were 20 high school teams at the daylong event, including a few "Extra Teams" that included junior varsity boys.
The Braves easily won the team score with 252.5 points, while the host Eskymos were second with 198 points. St. Ignace took third with 154, Iron Mountain was fourth with 112.5, and Florence (Wis.) was fifth with 107.5 points.
Gladstone had four individual champions: Jackson Simison (103 pounds), Jeremy Kadish (140 pounds), Josh Kadish (152) and Jake Cronick (189).
The Braves also had three other wrestlers make it to the final matches: Jared Syverson at 125, Brandon Gagnon at 160, and Tommy Bailey at heavyweight.
Escanaba had two individual champions: Zach Priebe at 125 pounds (beating Syverson, 11-4, in the final) and Travis Heller at 160 pounds (decisioning Gagnon, 6-4). Escanaba's Hunter Sadler lost to Jeremy Kadish in the 140-pound final match, 4-2, and Eskymo teammate Alec Slaga made it to the 152-pound final before losing, 4-0, to Josh Kadish.
St. Ignace had two champions: Galloway Thurston at 171 pounds, and defending state champion Joe Ostman at heavyweight. He pinned Gladstone's Bailey in the final match.
Iron Mountain had two champions: Alex Edwards at 112 pounds, and Jared Gauthier at 119.
Other individual champions included Negaunee's Brody Rosten (130), Menominee's Chris Briar (135), Newberry's Trenton Doughty (145), and Florence 215-pounder Tommy Lindow.
Bark River-Harris's Curtis Labadie took fourth place overall at 215 pounds.
