Escanaba Girls Use Defense To Topple Menominee

ESCANABA---It was clear from the first few minutes of Monday night's Escanaba Eskymos-Menominee Maroons girls basketball game that the first team to score 40 points would win. Both teams were playing tough defense, and there were as many turnovers being created as there were points on the scoreboard.

In the end, the Eskymos went on a 12-0 run late in the third quarter to post a 40-28 Great Northern Conference victory.

Eskymo sophomore Michelle LaFave had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead all scorers.

LaFave also had four blocked shots in the victory.

In the first quarter, Menominee led, 5-4, before the Eskymos scored eight straight points to take a 12-5 lead. Escanaba led, 18-12, at halftime, as points continued to be hard to come by.

And early in the third quarter, the Maroons managed to tie the game at 20-20.

But that's when the Eskymos scored twelve straight points, and Menominee could never get closer than five points the rest of the way.

The Eskymos improved to 3-7 on the season while Menominee fell to 6-5.
