Braves Fall In Marquette; Coach Questions Officials

MARQUETTE---The Gladstone High School volleyball team had a frustrating night in Marquette Tuesday, losing three close sets before falling, 3-0.

The scores were 25-20, 25-20, and 25-22.

Gladstone Coach Liz Gendron says that despite the 3-0 final score, this Great Northern Conference match could have gone either way.

"We dug huge holes in the beginning of the first two sets," she said. "The girls fought hard to get back into it. The stats were pretty even, both sides getting the same amount of kills, 27 for the match."

Gendron then turned her attention to the officials.

"As soon as we had the momentum, some unfortunate calls were made," she said. "I don't often complain in public about the officiating. But when it is outright, obvious, and inexcusably done in such a manner that it effects the players, it has to be brought to light."

Lexi Hongisto led the Braves with 13 kills and nine defensive digs. Callie Jensen had a team-high 18 digs, while Summer Demeuse added 12 digs and two service aces.

Gendron says her team needs to clean some things up as districts approach.

"I’m sure we had three times as many hitting errors (as Marquette did)," she said. "Had we taken care of the ball, and attacked aggressively, the result would be 3-0 in our favor."

Gladstone is off until next Tuesday, when the girls return to Marquette County to face the Negaunee Miners in a non-conference match.
