RAPID RIVER---The Battle of Alger County went right down to the wire Tuesday as the Munising Mustangs faced the Superior Central Cougars in a Class D district semifinal in Rapid River. The Cougars won the first two sets, but the Mustangs rallied to win the next three to advance to Thursday's championship match.
Superior Central won the first set, 25-22, then the Cougars took the second set, 25-23.
The third set was tied at 8-8, but the Mustangs went on a big run to stay alive, 25-18.
In the fourth set, it looked like Superior Central might get the win when the Cougars took a late 22-21 lead. But Munising scored four of the next five points to win, 25-23.
The fifth and deciding set was not close. Munising led all the way, winning, 15-10.
