Gladstone, Esky Top Two U.P. Teams At 'Challenge'

MARQUETTE---The Gladstone Braves and Escanaba Eskymos competed at the 19-team Marquette Wrestling Challenge on Saturday in Marquette.

The tournament featured top teams from both Michigan and Wisconsin. The Braves ended up in sixth place with 114 points while the Eskymos finished ninth with 79 points.

The Braves were the top Upper Peninsula team in the event, and the Eskymos were the second-best U.P. team.

Escanaba had two boys make it to the finals: Zach Priebe at 130 pounds and Kaleb Rahoi at 145 pounds. Priebe lost in the championship match to Scott Arneson of Merrill, Wis., on a pin at 3:09. Rahoi lost to Joel Rees of downstate Sparta on an 8-2 decision.

Gladstone had one boy make it to the finals: heavyweight Tommy Bailey. Bailey ended up being pinned by Tyler Schmidt of Merrill in 1:47.

The only Upper Peninsula wrestler to win a championship was Jared Gauthier of Iron Mountain in the 125-pound weight class.

Besides Priebe and Rahoi, Escanaba senior Travis Heller was on the podium Saturday night. He lost in the semifinals of the 160-pound weight class to Mason Reinhardt of Merrill, who finished second in the State of Wisconsin last season. Heller won his third place match over Jarrett Vanhavel of downstate Mason on a pin in 2:03.

Also, Escanaba's Hunter Sadler took fifth place at 152 pounds.

For Gladstone, besides Bailey's march to the finals, 135-pound sophomore Bobby Beauchamp made his way to the podium. He lost in the semifinals, but bounced back to win his third place match over Connor Clark of Mason High School, 2-0.

Gladstone also got several other boys to the podium: James Bruce took sixth place at 119, Jeremy Kadish finished in fourth place at 152, Bradley Gagnon was sixth at 171,
Jake Cronick finished fourth at 189 pounds, and Jack Cronick was sixth at 215 pounds.
