Olsen Helps Eskymos Win Elks Wrestle Invitational

ESCANABA---The championship of the Escanaba Elks Wrestling Invitational went right down to the wire Saturday night as 16 teams battled for the trophy.

It ended up coming down to the 215 pound match between Escanaba's Devin Olsen and Gladstone's Jack Cronick. Olsen won on a 5-3 decision, giving Escanaba the points needed to edge Gladstone for the championship, 260.5-250.5. Norway was third. 

Olsen has not been able to wrestle during weekday events because of a blood-clotting disorder for the past two seasons. He is medicated during the week, and then is able to stop medication in time for Saturday tournaments. Olsen is limited in his practice time.

But with the Elks Invitational Championship on the line, Olsen managed to beat Cronick, a boy he has wrestled against numerous times over the past several years.

Olsen was one of four Eskymos to win championship matches against Braves wrestlers.

Kaleb Rahoi topped Jeremy Kadish (152 pounds), 13-5. Travis Heller beat Brandon Gagnon (160 pounds) on a major decision, 10-1. Teddy Peipo defeated Bradley Gagnon (171 pounds) on a pin at 3:06. And Olsen sewed things up with his win at 215 pounds.

Escanaba also got championship from Zach Priebe at 130 pounds, and Hunter Sadler at 145 pounds. Gladstone had three champions: James Bruce at 119 pounds (beatng Esky's Sergei Lamarche in the finals), Jake Cronick at 189 pounds, and Tommy Bailey at heavyweight. Bobby Beauchamp was second overall at 135 pounds for the Braves.

Escanaba's Peipo, who started as a fifth seed, won all of his matches by pin to pull the upset at 171 pounds. Peipo was named the tournament's Most Valuable Wrestler.
