BAY CITY---The Escanaba High School girls bowling team lost a heartbreaker to Bay City Western in the Division Two regional tournament in Bay City this weekend.
But the Eskymos are still heading to the state finals, as the top three teams qualify.
Escanaba lost to Bay City Western by just one pin, 3603-3602.
The Escanaba girls were in fith place after the series of six "Baker" games, but they moved into second place after the first team game and never looked back. The girls improved their lead over third place Bay City John Glenn by a whopping 419 pins.
The girls were led by seniors Cathy Pomeroy (who averaged a 199), Jenna Larson (198), and Taylor Cordy (180).
Teammates Trisha Neumann and Maria Backlund, Marissa LaPorte helped bring EHS girls their first ever team state-qualifying finish.

On Saturday, the individual portion of the tournament was held at Monitor Lanes. Two Eskymos qualified for the state meet in Waterford as individuals: Cathy Pomeroy (sixth with 1065 pins in six games) and Jenna Larson (ninth with 1039 pins).
Marquette's Alexa Ingram was second overall (1186 pins) and Iron Mountain's Tori Boersma was eigthth (1040 pins).
BOYS DIVISION TWO REGIONAL---The Escanaba Eskymos finished eighth out of 13 teams and did not qualify for the boys state finals. Marquette finished ninth, Sault Ste. Marie 11th, and Iron Mountain 13th. One Marquette boy did qualify as an individual: junior Trevor Buchanan had 1145 pins and finished third overall.
DIVISION THREE BOWLING BOYS REGIONALS AT CHEBOYGAN
The Ishpeming Hematites boys bowling team won the regional championship by a wide margin over Cheboygan, 4085-3897. Pinconning also qualified for the state finals as the third place team. Menominee finished sixth, and the Gladstone Braves were tenth.
Individually, Ishpeming's Matt Kilberg and Kirk Guckenberg finished eighth and ninth, respectively, to qualify for the state finals as singles. Menominee's Dakota Klatt also qualified for states, finishing third with 1234 pins.

The Ishpeming Hematites girls bowling team finished as regional runners up and will qualify for the state finals. Standish-Sterling topped Ishpeming, 3610-3407. Menominee finished sixth and Gladstone was 12th. Neither qualified for states.
Individually, Ishpeming had three girls qualify for states: Jamie Olson (third with 1062 pins), Kaytlynne Carlson (fifth with 1060), and Kaylee O'Connor (sixth with 1040). Menominee's Jessica Nutter took eighth (1032 pins) and also qualified.
