Gladstone Cheerleaders Win 'U.P. Cheer Classic'

MUNISING---The Gladstone High School competitive cheerleading team won a tournament championship for the second straight weekend. After taking first place last week at home, the Gladstone girls won the U.P. Cheer Classic in Munising on Saturday.

Gladstone took first place with 668.86 points, while Escanaba finished seconcd with 661.22 points. Kingsford was third with 656.70 points, and the girls from downstate Hart High School were fourth with 654.26 points. The Kingsford girls were penalized ten points in the third round on Saturday, otherwise, they would have finished second.

Hart was also penalized eight points in the second round of its routine.

The battle was between Gladstone and Escanaba all afternoon long.

In the first round, the Braves won by nine points (226.7-217.9). In the second round, the Eskymos won by seven points (184.72-177.26). Gladstone won the third round by six points (264.9-258.6), to take the championship by just over seven points.

There were ten varsity teams in Saturday's event. The standings:

MIDDLE SCHOOL COMPETITION: Munising's middle schoolers won first place with 442.60 points. Escanaba was second with 404.78, and Gladstone was third with 353.36 points. Manistique was fourth and East Jordan ended up fifth.
