Esky, Gladstone Girls Win District Championships

ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School girls softball team came from behind to beat the Cheboygan Chiefs, 7-6, to win the MHSAA Division Two District Championship Saturday in Escanaba.

Earlier in the day, the Eskymos shut out Petoskey, 4-0, in the semifinals.

In the game against Petoskey, Escanaba got a two-run homer from Becca Piron and a solo shot from Michelle LaFave.

In the game against Cheboygan, Piron homered again, and had three base hits. Jayme Frappier hit her first home run: a three-run shot.

Escanaba (25-8) advances to the D-2 regional tournament next Saturday in Cadillac.

GLADSTONE WINS 15TH IN A ROW---It's been a very long time since the Gladstone Braves have not won a softball district championship. Fifteen years, in fact.

The Braves beat Westwood, 7-4, and then blanked Negaunee, 10-0, to with another MHSAA Division Three District Championship. Gladstone will try for its 13th straight regional title next weekend in Traverse City with a semifinal game against Tawas.

On Saturday, Lexi Hongisto hit her 13th home run of the season, and Morgan Kowalski also went deep. Lauren Parrett hit her first-ever home run. In the championship game, Jenna Steinhoff pitched all six innings, allowing only one base hit.

Gladstone, the defending state champions, is now 24-14-2 on the season.
