The Escanaba Eskymos, Gladstone Braves, and Rapid River Rockets all won their district tournament softball openers on Tuesday, while the Bark River-Harris Broncos were eliminated. Tuesday night's results:
ESCANABA 10, KINGSFORD 0---In Division Two, the Escanaba Eskymos won their "play-in" game in six innings at Lemmerand Park. The girls got off to a slow start, leading only 2-0 after three innings. But Escanaba scored three runs in the fourth and four more runs in the fifth inning to pull away. Escanaba will travel to Sault Ste. Marie on Friday to play Cheboygan in the district semifinals. Game time is 2:00. The tournament was moved from Saturday to Friday because of a forecast for rain in the Sault on Saturday.
GLADSTONE 5, CALUMET 0---In Division Three in Gladstone, the Braves got a shutout performance from pitcher Jenna Steinhoff, who struck out six batters and issused no walks. Morgan Kowalski went 3-for-4 with a double, and she made a diving catch from the catcher's position. Gladstone will host Iron Mountain in the district semifinals Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.
RAPID RIVER 11, SUPERIOR CENTRAL 0---In Division Four in Rapid River, the Rockets got a shutout in the circle from Ericka Schwartz, allowing just two hits in the six inning game. Hannah Kanyuh ended things with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rapid River travels to Newberry on Friday to play Ishpeming at 11 a.m.
