TRAVERSE CITY---The Marquette Redmen scored four goals in the second period, two of them on the power play, and beat the Big Rapids Cardinals, 5-1, on Saturday at the North/South Hockey Showcase in Traverse City.
Marquette also won its game on Friday over Grandville by the same 5-1 score.
In Saturday, Beau Bateson scored for Big Rapids in the first period before the Redmen took control in the middle 17 minutes.
Captain Joe Phillips scored and assisted on two others in a seven-minute span of the second period, with Hunter Doucette scoring twice to put Marquette ahead, 3-1.
Then with time running out on the period, defenseman Ryan Morissey jammed one home...a buzzer beater...giving Marquette a 4-1 lead.
The only goal of the third period was a shorthanded marquer by Branden Campbell.
Marquette (9-4-1) visits Escanaba Tuesday night. The junior varsity game is set for 5:00, with the varsity game set for 7:30.
