ESCANABA---The Marquette High School wrestling team beat the Escanaba Eskymos, 63-15, to win a Division Two district championship Wednesday in Escanaba. The Redmen also beat Sault Ste. Marie, 57-19, in the district semifinals.
The evening was highlighted by a milestone for Marquette senior Beau Caster, who won his 149th and 150th career varsity wrestling matches.
In the 171-pound semifinal against Sault Ste. Marie's Kevin Sharp, Caster needed only 28 seconds to record the pin.
In the championship match against Escanaba, Caster moved up a weight class to face Braden Olsen in the 189-pound final. Caster got the pin in 1 minute, 12 seconds.
Sault Ste. Marie wrestled well in the semifinals, depsite bringing just eight wrestlers to Escanaba.
Anton LaPine earned a pin at 145 pounds, and Adam Lajoie got a pin at 189 pounds to bring the Blue Devils to within 33-19 on the scoreboard. But the Blue Devils had to forfeit the next four weight classes (215, 285, 103, 112).
In the championship, Marquette earned pins within the first period in the first three matches (125, 130, 135 pounds) and the Redmen cruised to the victory.
A bright spot for Escanaba was Ean Bevins, who pinned Marquette's Darren Holman in 74 seconds in the 145-pound weight class. Simon Chouinard also earned an Eskymo pin at 112 pounds, and 103-pound freshman Justin Mathieson got a win by a 4-2 decision.
But that was not enough for the Eskymos, and the Redmen earned a spot in next Wednesday's team regionals in Petoskey.
Wrestlers from both teams will compete in the individual district tournament this Saturday morning in Gaylord.
