Negaunee Wins Division One Boys Tennis U.P. Title

NEGAUNEE---The Negaunee Miners won the MHSAA Division One boys tennis Upper Peninsula title on Wednesday, with Delta County's teams finishing fifth and sixth.

Escanaba had a pair of doubles teams reach the finals before losing, and the Eskymo team finished in fifth place. Gladstone finished last with no points.

The start of the tournament was delayed by an hour because of rain, but despite cloudy, chilly conditions, the boys were able to complete the day. The Miners won the titles at #2, #3 and #4 singles and doubles to win the team trophy with 21 points.

Escanaba's #1 doubles team of Paul Carne and Nick Dufour battled Kingsford's Daunte Fortner and Tyle Beauchamp before losing, 6-1, 6-2.

And at #3 doubles, Escanaba's Alex Valentine and Soren Thompson reached the final before losing to Negaunee's Jacob Talaga and Darius Provost, 7-5, 6-3.
