UP Wrestlers Battle At Division 4 Indvidual District

MANISTIQUE---Fifteen high school wrestling teams from across the Upper Peninsula and northern lower peninsula met in Manistique on Saturday for the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Division Four Individual District Tournament.

The Iron Mountain Mountaineers and Bark River-Harris Broncos moved the most wrestlers on to the individual regionals in Saturday's action. The top four finishers in each weight class made the podium and advanced to next Saturday's individual regionals in Charlevoix.

For the Mountaineers, one of the marquee matchups came in the 150-pound weight class, with Evan Haferkorn facing Munising's Reagan Bowerman.

Hafterkorn won the well-wrestled match on a 4-0 decision to take the championship. Both Hafterkorn and Bowerman will advance to next Saturday's individual regionals.

The 126-pound championship was a rematch of last year's state championship match between two Mountaineer wrestlers: Shawn Mcguire and Tyler Winch. And just like that match last March at Ford Field, Mcguire won this one, on a 6-1 decision. Both, of course, will advance to the regionals, where they will likely face each other again.

Iron Mountain's Fulton Stroud won a championship at 165 pounds, pinning Isaac Paull of Rogers City in the championship match in 1:34.

At 113 pounds, Iron Mountain's Alexander Wilson won a district championship. He pinned Dalton Savoie of Rudyard in exactly three minutes in the final.

For the Broncos, defending state champion Drew Allgeyer squeezed his way to a district championship at 190 pounds with a 10-8 win over Charlevoix's Landon Swanson.

At 144 pounds, the Broncos' Josh Riley defeated St. Ignace's Gabriel Werheiser in the championship match on a 9-2 decsion. Both will advance to regionals, but Riley will have a better seed thanks to his victory.

At 157 pounds, Dillon Raab beat wrestlers from Rudyard and Charlevoix on pins in 1:27 and 1:28, respectively, to reach the final. Raab then pinned Jax Lipnitz of St. Ignace in the championship match in 1:45. Again, both will advance to regionals.

Broncos 215-pounder Lucas Sischo pinned Munising's Robert Johns in the semifinals, but he lost an 8-2 decision to Charlevoix's Trevor Streeter in the final. Sischo will also advance to the regionals.

The 132-pound championship match was between Iron Mountain's Daniel Manier and Bark River's Elliot Corrigan. Manier won the championship on a pin in 3:32. They both could possibly face each other again next Saturday in the regionals.

The Gwinn Model Towners had a district champion in the heavyweight bracket. Colton Berglund won the championship by pinning Charlevoix's Adam Streeter in the final in just 65 seconds. He also pinned Ishpeming's Carlos Perez in the semfinals.

Manistique had one boy reach a district championship match: Landon Weber at 106 pounds. He lost to Dalton Champion of St. Ignace on a pin in 32 seconds.

Ishpeming had one wrestler reach a championship match: Logan Hurkmans at 175 pounds. He pinned Newberry's Kennedy Depew in the semifinals, but then was pinned by Charlevoix's Brady Jess in 2:13.

Newberry's Hayden O'Neil was a runner-up, losing to San Fry of Charlevoix on a pin in 1:25 in the 138-pound weight class.
