DETROIT---Six Upper Peninsula high school wrestlers will go for state championships on Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association's individual championships at Detroit's Ford Field.
Two of them are defending state champions in Division Four: Shawn McGuire of Iron Mountain at 126 pounds and Drew Allgeyer of Bark River-Harris at 190 pounds.
Also going for state championships are Dillon Raab of Bark River-Harris (157 pounds), Evan Haferkorn of Iron Mountain (150 pounds), Fulton Stroud of Iron Mountain (165 pounds) and Kingsford's Eli Rouse (215 pounds).
In addition to those six, there are more U.P. Wrestlers still alive in consolation brackets and can still earn spots from third-through-eighth place on the podium.
Three of them are Gladstone Braves, who all made the semifinals in their brackets before losing in the evening sessions. Drew Hansen (113 pounds), Austin Solis (144 pounds), and Cole Potier (190 pounds) all won two matches before losing in the semifinals. They can all still finish as high as third in Saturday's action.
Iron Mountain's Tyler Winch, who lost to teammate McGuire in last year's state championship match, lost this time in the semifinals and will be wrestling for as high as third place on Saturday.
In the girl's division, Iron Mountain's Shayna Hruska, who became the first girl ever to win an Upper Peninsula championship in the boys bracket, won her first match, lost her second, and then beat fellow Yooper Kaila Sylvester of Gwinn in the consolation. Hruska will continue wrestling on Saturday.
The other UP girl who's still alive in the consolation rounds is Shawna Sundholm, who won two matches by pin on Friday, after being pinned in her quarterfinal match. She will wrestle in the consolation brackets on Saturday,
Rouse will be the only U.P. Wrestler in Division Three to have a shot at a state title. The 215-pounder defeated Bryce Benard of Muskegon Orchard View on a pin, topped John Peterson of Hillsdale, 8-2, and then a major decision (11-3) over Joel Simon of Lakewood in the semifinals.
Haferkorn won his matches, 11-0, 12-8, and then a pin in the semifinal over Alex Gleason of Hesperia. Stroud dominated his first two matches on 13-2 and 10-2 major decisions, and then won a war in “sudden victory”. 4-2, over Calix Campbell of Hudson.
McGuire dominated his opening match,18-2, but had to slug his way to wins in the quarterfinals (14-10) and in the semifinals (8-7 over Troy Trombley of Memphis).
Winch also had a “sudden victory” win in the quarterfinal before losing to Perry Lake of Bronson in the semifinal, 5-0. Winch will wrestle in the consolation rounds on Saturday.
Raab easily pinned his three opponents, in 1:52, 1:17, and 2:29. He will face the boy he lost to last year in the state championship match Saturday afternoon.
Allgeyer won by a pin, major decision, and then a “sudden victory”, 6-4, over Tagg Gott of Schoolcraft. This keeps alive his bid to be a repeat state champion.
For Gladstone, Potier had a pin, followed by a 5-1 win, before losing a 3-1 decision to Troy Demas of Constantine. Hansen won on a tech fall and a pin, before losing to Dale Gant of Grand Rapids Catholic Central in the semifinals, on a pin with 52 seconds left in the match. It was just the second loss of the season for Hansen.
Eli Terrien, the Braves' other 113-pounder, lost two of his three matches, but his one win over Emmanuel Hernandez of Kent City was the 100th of his career. Terrien was eliminated from this weekend's competition.
Solis pinned his first opponent and won in a “sudden victory” in the quarterfinal. Solis lost an 8-3 decision in the semifinals to Blake Cosby of Dundee. Sollis will wrestle in the consolation rounds with a podium spot in his future.
Escanaba's only wrestler, 120-pounder Cade Krueger, lost both of his matches, by scores of 7-3 and 10-1. Marquette's only wrestler, heavyweight Dasan Smith, lost on 7-5 (sudden victory) and 7-2 decisions. Manistique's only wrestler, Dillon Hates, lost both of his matches on a pin, and an 11-6 decision.
Munising had two wrestlers at Ford Field. Senior Reagan Bowerman won his first match, but was eliminated after losing his next two. Andrew Cain lost both of his matches by pins and was eliminated.
Newberry's Hayden O'Neil won one match but lost his other two, and Sault Ste. Marie's Will Ohman won one match but lost his other two. And Jay Lipnitz of St. Ignace won one match, but lost the other two, and was eliminated.
