Escanaba Eskymo Softball Falls To Fourth-Ranked Clio Mustangs

CLIO, Mich.---The Escanaba Eskymos lost twice in downstate Clio on Friday. The first game was a classic, with the fourth-ranked Mustangs winning, 1-0.

Clio Pitcher Addie Taylor threw a no-hitter for Clio, and Escanaba senior Landry Bray threw a one-hitter. That one hit, by Clio's Summer Stevens, was an RBI double in the third inning.

Bray, in one of her best performances of the season in the circle, striking out eight batters. She did walk six batters, but was able to keep those runners from coming home, except for Madalyn Raliegh, who walked and scored on the hit by Stevens. The Eskymo defense was strong all afternoon long.

Taylor struck out eleven batters for the Mustangs, and alowed the Eskymos only one baserunner: a two-out walk to Mary Kate Tourangeau in the top of the third inning.

Clio also won the second game, 7-3. Escanaba had a 1-0 lead in the first inning on hits by Abby Derkos and Harlee Coolman. The Mustangs got that run back in the bottom of the first inning, and then they scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Escanaba committed four errors in that game, but all seven runs against  EHS pitcher Cam Buckley ended up being earned.

Escanaba had eight hits in the second game of Friday's douvleheader, with three of them by Derkos. Mara Anderson collected two base hits.

Veronica Tate pitched a complete game for Clio. With the sweep, the Clio Mustangs improved to 14-0 in the season. They are ranked fourth in the state in Division Three.

Escanaba's record fell to 11-5 on the season. The Eskymos were receiving votes in the latest statewide poll. Escanaba is back home on Tuesday to face Kingsford.
