Escanaba Girls Tennis Team Falls To Westwood, Tops Munising

The Escanaba High School girls tennis team won one match and lost another on Monday in Ishpeming. The Eskymos defeated Munising, 5-3, but lost to Westwood, 7-1.

“Last time we played Westwood we lost, 5-3, with several close matches,” Eskymo Coach Chris Ogren said. “Today didn’t go quite as well. All three matches that we won last time were flipped around today and we came out on the losing side.”

“We were able to flip one match in our favor, however, at #1 doubles where Claire Jacobsen and Sophie Hill played their best tennis of the year. The two looked locked in from the very beginning both at the baseline and at the net.”

“The Westwood #1 doubles team is among the best in the UP, so for Claire and Sophie to beat them as cleanly as they did today was truly impressive.”

The match against Munising saw the Eskymos use mostly junior varsity players, since the Mustangs will not be at the conference meet, nor the U.P. Finals. The Eskymos will be back at home Tuesday afternoon against the Marquette Sentinels. The scores from Monday are all posted below.
