The Escanaba Cubs carried an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning against the Kimberly Cougars Saturday in Wisconsin. But walks, hit-battsmen, passed balls, errors, and a few hits led to an eight-run outburst that gave Kimberly a 10-8 win. The Cubs also lost to Highland, Indiana, 10-0, earlier in the day. The Gladstone Indians pounded out 13 hits and beat Hortonville, 11-4, Saturday at the KBO Varsity Baseball Invitational in Kimberly. Cody Frazer led the way with three hits while Paul Tomaszewski, Justin Jurek, and Jake Pearson all had two hits. Click the above headline to see photos.
The Upper Peninsula All-Star Football game was held Saturday at the Superior Dome, and Delta County was well-represented as the East topped the West, 42-14. Escanaba's Austin Young scored a touchdown and was given the tournament's "character award", and Bark River-Harris standout Jake Kleiman had a 62-yard run that set up Young's TD.
Leah Wigger shot a 6-under 66 in the second round of the Island Resort Championship on Saturday to take a two-shot lead over Aimee Neff. It's a crowded leaderboard after the first round of the Island Resort Championships LPGA 'Futures' Symetra Tour event at the Sweetgrass Golf Course in Harris. Aimee Neff, Courtney Massey, Laura Martin, and Michelle Shin all shot two-under-par 70's on Friday. Five other golfers are one stroke back. The Escanaba Cubs opened tournament play in Kimberly, Wis., on Friday, and faced a tough opponent right off the bat. The Cubs fell to Appleton Post 38, 10-0, at Sunset Park. Some of the best ladies golfers in the world have returned to the Upper Peninsula this week for the Symetra Tour's Road to the LPGA at the Sweetgrass Golf Course in Harris. The Escanaba Cubs beat the Marquette Blues for the second straight Wednesday night, but this time, it was much different than last week's wild 11-9 win at Haley Field. The Cubs rode the pitching of Bailey Lamb and got clutch two-out hits from Nick Vandermissen and Alex DeHaan and the Cubs posted a 3-0 win at Al Ness Field. The Escanaba Junior Cubs swept an American Legion Baseball doubleheader from the Mid County Mavericks, 15-8 and 15-7, Sunday afternoon in Daggett. Andrew Miller and Storm Fournier combined to get the win on the mound in the opener, while Andrew Sedlar and Alex Ruatti pitched the second game. The Junior Cubs are now 8-0. The Gladstone Indians came oh so close to advancing to the championship game of the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament on Sunday....after getting a lot of help just to make the semifinals. Gladstone led top-seeded DePere, 5-3, in the seventh inning, but the Panthers rallied to beat the Indians, 6-5, in nine innings. The Escanaba Cubs played five excellent innings of baseball against Midland Berrryhill on Saturday as the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament continued. But the wheels fell off in the sixth inning and the Cubs lost, 8-0. Later, in the win-or-else game against Chief Pontiac, the Cubs committed six errors and lost, 7-1. It was All-Star Saturday in St. Ignace as the Upper Peninsula's best high school senior basketball players competed in two All-Star games. Escanaba's Olivia Nash was the MVP in the girls game as the South beat the North, 80-72. In the boys game, Sault Ste. Marie's Steve Angeli was the MVP as the North won, 104-91. Marie (Ontario), 11-6, in the night game. The result left Gladstone with a 2-2 record, and still hoping for a spot in Sunday's tournament semifinals. The annual "Yooper 9-10" Boys Baseball Tournament has completed its quarterfinal round, with the semifinals set for Sunday and the championship game planned for Tuesday night in Escanaba. The Escanaba Polecats fell behind 3-0 early on in Wednesday's Wishigan League game against the Felch Rangers, and the Dickinson County team didn't even hit the ball out of the infield. Gladstone Braves right fielder Katie Becker was named to the Division Three softball All-State team Wednesday by the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association. Becker led her team in batting and had flawless play in right field as the Braves advanced to the state championship game in Battle Creek. Three of her teammates were honorable mention All-State: first baseman Jammie Botruff, third baseman Nicole Sharon, and pitcher Tinner Sharon.
The Gladstone Indians stayed undefeated in the Mid Pen League South Division Wednesday with an 8-2 win over the Channing Railroaders at Don Olsen Field. Three Indians pitchers combined to toss a five-hitter, and Paul Tomaszewski hit a three-run homer to break open a close game.
