The Gladstone High School track and field teams swept the Kingsford Flivvers in a dual meet Thursday afternoon at the Marble Athletic Field. The Gladstone boys won, 92-45, and the Braves' girls won, 84-53.
In the boys meet, Justin Pederson won the 100, high jump, long jump, and was part of a relay win. Jared Vuksan won the shot put and discus, Kyle Arvan won the 1600 and 3200, Jason Thompson won the pole vault, and Ian Houle won the 300 hurdles.
In the girls meet, Jenna Leisner won the 100 dash, 300 hurdles, and was part of a first place relay team. Jessica Young won the shot put and discus.
Most of the Upper Peninsula's "small school" track and field teams took part in a meet at the Superior Dome Thursday afternoon. In the girls event, Superior Central was first with 91 points. Bark River-Harris was second with 61, Pickford took third with 44, Forest Park was fourth with 43 points, and Ontonagon took fifth place with 41 points. In the boys event, Pickford won with 76 points. Rapid River was second with 72, Forest Park took third with 63 points. Bark River-Harris and Munising tied for fourth with 61. It was a raw, nasty evening at Al Ness Field as cold winds and heavy rain converged on the area Thursday night. But the Eskymos fought through the conditions, and a tiny strike zone, to beat the Kingsford American Legion Blues, 14-7. David Falish and Nick Vandermissen both had three base hits for the Eskymos, and Vandermissen scored four runs. Andrew Sedlar pitched four innings in relief to earn the mound victory.
There have been several attempts over the years to have a high school varsity baseball program in Gladstone. But some in community are planning a new effort to ask the Gladstone School Board to allow for a Braves baseball program. A meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 25th, at the Gladstone Legion Hall, where all kids interested in high school baseball are being asked to show up. It was the one night of the year where members of all of the Escanaba High School spring sports teams were able to gather in one place. The annual "Meet The Eskymos" event was held Wednesday night at the Escanaba High School Commons. The players and coaches for the baseball, softball, tennis, track, and golf teams were all on hand to talk about their teams. The Escanaba High School baseball team turned up the heat Tuesday as they faced the Norway Knights on a cold evening at Al Ness Field. The Eskymos scored eleven runs in the first inning and rolled to a 17-0 win over the Knights in a game shortened to four and a half innings by the mercy rule.
It was Escanaba's second lopsided win over the Knights in the past seven days. The Eskymos won in Norway, 13-0, last Wednesday. The Escanaba High School boys track team took sixth place out of eight teams, and the Eskymo girls took fourth out of nine teams at the Division One Track and Field Meet Tuesday at the Superior Dome. The Esky boys had 31 points, far behind meet champion Menominee with 91 points. Marquette was second and Houghton third. In the girls meet, Escanaba had 53.25 points. Marquette won with 84 points. The Manistique Emeralds varsity softball team welcomed two guests to the Emerald City on Monday for a softball doubleheader: the Escanaba JV Eskymos, and Old Man Winter. The teams played softball under snowy, windy conditions, with the JV Eskymos getting a big first inning to top Manistique, 13-7. The second game was cancelled.
"It was terrible," Manistique Coach Dave McNeil said. "Big winds, big snowflakes. And I'll tell you what. There's a huge advantage to getting big runs in the first inning when it's 28-degree weather! We played even with them after that, but that first inning was big."

The Gladstone Braves softball team won three games at the Pinconning Invitational in Lower Michigan on Saturday to bring the tournament trophy back across the Mackinac Bridge. The Braves beat Reese, 12-2, then downed the host Spartans, 18-2.
Gladstone shut out Fenton, 2-0, in a very competitive game in which the Braves got just one base hit and the Tigers managed two hits. The Braves scored their runs in the third inning on a walk, a pair of bunts, and aggressive baserunning. Gladstone improved to 4-2-1 on the season.
The Escanaba Eskymo Boys Tennis team opened its season on Saturday at the Kaukauna Invitational in Wisconsin. But the team traveled with mostly freshmen and sophomores because 22 of the team's 40 players were gone....either at the Junior/Senior Prom, or taking ACT College Exams. The Escanaba High School baseball team had its four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday as the Shawano (Wis.) Hawks beat the Eskymos, 7-1, at Al Ness Field. The Hawks broke open a close game by scoring four runs in the fourth inning. Escanaba committed five errors in the game, and also walked six batters and hit two others.

The Escanaba High School baseball team got some help from local Boy Scouts on Saturday, as the boys took great care with the American flag that flies on the pole behind the center field fence at Al Ness Field. The Northern Michigan University Intercollegiate Athletics Department announced the recipients of the Athlete of the Year and the Gildo Canale Senior Awards at the Hall of Fame and Student-Athlete Awards Banquet on Saturday. Named Athlete of the Year were Chelsea Lyons and Erik Soderman. Bailey Franklin and Justin Florek were selected as the recipients of the Gildo Canale Senior Award. The Escanaba High School baseball team improved to 4-0 on the season Friday by turning back the Rudyard Bulldogs, 9-0 and 9-4, at Al Ness Field.
David Falish came within two outs of getting a no-hitter in the opener, settling for a two-hitter with nine strikeouts. Devin Olsen won his Eskymo pitching debut in the nightcap, allowing two runs over four innings.

The Manistique Emeralds jumped to a 3-0 lead early in their softball game against the Norway Knights Wednesday afternoon. But the Knights scored five runs in the second inning to get the lead, and Norway went on to post a 9-4 win in the first game of the doubleheader. The Knights also won the second game, 13-8.

There have been many wars between the Escanaba Eskymos and the Norway Knights over the past few baseball seasons. But Wednesday night's matchup was not one of them. The Eskymos pounded the Knights at Marion Park, 13-0, in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. The Knights fielded a team that includes nine freshmen, and the Eskymos had five freshmen on the roster. That youth showed, especially for the Knights, as the boys were pretty much helpless against the pitching of Eskymo senior Alex DeHaan was in complete control for most of the afternoon, yielding only two base hits and striking out seven batters in his four innings of work on the mound. Nick Vandermissen drove in four runs and Austin Young had a home run and three RBI as the Escanaba Eskymos beat the Marquette Redmen, 12-2, in the baseball season opener for both teams Tuesday night. Great Lakes Ice Racing proudly features modified cycles racing on a quarter mile oval track on a frozen river. Many hours of hard work by members of our club are needed to groom the icy surface to allow bikes with special studded tires to compete in an exciting environment unlike any other.
Sands Speedway is located in Sands, MI. It's an asphalt oval track racing on Saturday evenings during the summer. "Sands Speedway is the premiere track in the Lake Superior region."
Jason DeGrave, and his wife Lea had their dream come true with the opportunity to purchase and maintain the former Zambon's Motorcross track. They have alot of great things in the works but it all takes money and time. They will be having two weekends of AMA district 16 points motocross races and are planning on having a tough truck series, snowcross, and possibly ice races.
The schedule for the 2012 racing season is beginning to take shape. Races will include events in Houghton, Marquette, Skandia, Escanaba and other events.

Delta County's three high school softball teams had a successful weekend at the ninth annual Northern Michigan University "Spring Swing" softball tournament. The Rapid River Rockets won all three of their games, the Escanaba Eskymos went 2-1, and the Gladstone Braves went 1-1-1, with their only loss coming to the Rockets. And the Escanaba junior varsity team won all three of its games in the two-day event. The Escanaba Eskymos have just three seniors on their roster, but heavy plenty of young talent as the 2012 high school baseball season begins Tuesday evening. Escanaba will host the Marquette Redmen in the first game under new head coach Kirk Schwalbach.
"Senior Night" ceremonies won't take long, with only Alex DeHaan, Austin Young, and Ian DeMarse making up the Class of 2012. But the Eskymos do have talent in returning junior starters Nick Vandermissen and Dave Falish.
The Norway Speedway is a third mile oval track thatis slightly banked. The track, originally a dirt track, was built in 1942 and was blacktopped in 1979.
The 2012 high school softball season got under way Friday with the ninth-annual Northern Michigan University Spring Swing Softball tournament at the Superior Dome. The Rapid River Rockets beat the Superior Central Cougars, 10-1, as Shannon Wolf hit two home runs and Heather Sanderson added an inside-the-park homer. The Escanaba Eskymos opened the season on a positive note Friday, beating the Marquette Redettes, 6-1, at the Dome. Codi Jenshak picked up the win on the mound.
The Atlanta Knights won the USA Hockey Junior A Tier III National Championship on Tuesday afternoon, beating the Long Island (NY) Royals, 4-3, in Rochester, Minn. Escanaba High School graduate Brent Kallio scored the first two goals of the game and then the Knights held on from there. Kallio finished the tournament with seven points (3G, 4A) in five games. "It's pretty hard to put my exact emotions into one word," Kallio said after the title game. "It is the craziest feeling of happiness that I've ever had in my life."
The Keweenaw Storm Under-19 girls hockey team lost Saturday in the quarterfinals of the USA Hockey National Tournament in Irving, Texas. The girls fell to the Alaskan state champions, 1-0, to drop out of the running for a national championship. The Storm lost despite outshooting Alaska, 29-11.
While the high school softball season is still in pre-practice mode, the college softball season is under way. And Gladstone High School graduate MacKenzie Shepeck is making the most of her opportunity as a freshman at Western Michigan University. Shepeck picked up her second pitching victory of the young season on Sunday as she pitched three scoreless innings to shut down the Miami (Ohio) Red Hawks, 5-1.
The Carney-Nadeau High School basketball team cleaned up on post-season awards this week following an improbable run to the Class D state semifinals. The Wolves were named the Upper Peninsula's Class D Team of the Year by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
The Wolves received 14 votes, while Ewen-Trout Creek got four votes and Munising three. Carney-Nadeau senior Lucas Moreau and Wolves junior Wade Schetter were both named to the Class D First Team. Bark River-Harris senior Jake Kleiman was also named to the Class D First Team, and Mid Peninsula junior Brett Branstrom was selected to the All-Class Dream Team.
