Eskymos Third, Braves Fourth At U.P. Tennis Finals

KINGSFORD---The Negaunee Miners won the MHSAA Division One U.P. Girls Tennis Championship Wednesday afternoon at Kingsford High School. The host Flivvers were second, followed by the Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves.

The tournament was delayed by a week because of rain and cold winds on Oct. 1.

Negaunee won three of the four singles flights and one doubles flight to win the team title with 19 points.

Gladstone's Paige Schwartz and Anna Carabella finished as U.P. runners-up.
Kingsford won the #1 doubles flight and had plenty of finalists to finish second with 13 points.

Escanaba had U.P. champions at #4 singles and #4 doubles to take third with 11 points.

Gladstone was fourth (6), while Marquette and Menominee tied for fifth (3).

For Gladstone, the lone finalists came at #1 doubles, as Paige Schwartz and Anna Caramella won their first set against Kingsford's Alli Vanremortel and Jaelyn Jennings.

But the Kingsford girls won the next two sets to take the U.P. championship.

Escanaba's Hannah Beversluis won a U.P. title in singles, and teammate Kayla Van Portfliet was runner-up in her finals match. Escanaba's Olivia LaForest and Angie Lamarche won the U.P. title at #4 doubles, while the Eskymo #3 doubles team of Taylor Gauthier and Karlie Mayville lost to Menominee and settled for runners-up.
