Eskymo Wrestlers Eliminated In Regional Semifinal
MT. PLEASANT---The wrestling season came to an end Wednesday night for the Escanaba Eskymos as they fell to the Clio Mustangs, 44-29, in an MHSAA Division Two regional semifinal at Mt. Pleasant High School. Gaylord beat Clio in the final, 37-34. For Escanaba, it was a season that saw a lot of very young wrestlers put into the line-up, with several older wrestlers missing for various reasons. The Eskymos still have three boys heading to the Individual Regionals on Saturday with a shot at making the state finals. Then Bryant Beem picked up four points for the Eskymos with a major decision win over Clio's Frank Stevens, 13-3. The Mustangs did not have a wrestler to fill the 103-pound weight class, so Simon Chouinard got the six points for the forfeit and Clio's lead was down to 18-16. But the next three matches went to the Mustangs, and the lead grew to 32-16. Denham Miron was able to pin Clio's Paige Amy in 1:11 to earn six points at 130 pounds, but at 135 pounds, Clio put it away when Mason Smith pinned freshman Scout Wunder. It was 38-22, and the best the Eskymos could do is tie the match by getting three straight pins. That didn't happen, although Corey McInerney won a tight 4-3 decision over Clio's Chase Cross at 140 pounds. And Braeyden Papineau closed the evening for the Eskymos with a major decision win (17-3) over Dan Mills at 152 pounds. Wunder (135), Papineau (152), and Hoque (215) will all wrestle in the Individual Regionals at Bay City Western High School on Saturday, hoping to make it to the state finals in March at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
