Rockets Win District; Braves, Broncos Also Win
NEWBERRY---The Rapid River High School girls softball team won twice on Thursday to win a MHSAA Division Four district championship. The Rockets beat Munising, 15-0, in the semifinals, and then after Newberry shutout Superior Central in the other semifinal (also 15-0), Rapid River edged Newberry, 5-2, to win the district trophy and advance to the regionals next week in Pellston. In the first game, which went only four innings due to the mercy rule, Erika Rubick pitched her fifth straight shutout. She allowed only one hit, and struck out nine Mustang batters. Rubick, Maddie Moss, and Lindsay Knuth all had RBI doubles in this game. In the championship game against Newberry, Schwartz threw the first six innings without allowing a run, extending her scoreless streak to 30 innings. The Indians managed to break that streak in the top of the seventh inning, but the Rockets had a big enough lead to win the trophy. Schwartz struck out ten batters against Newberry. Kendyl Miller, Knuth, and Rubick all had RBI doubles in the championship game. Rapid River improved to 22-10 on the season. GLADSTONE 10, HOUGHTON 0---The Gladsone Braves opened the Division Three districts with a 10-0 win over the Houghton Gremlins in Houghton on Thursday. Jenna Steinhoff pitched a one-hitter. "Everybody got on base at least one time," Braves Coach Ashley Hughes said. "It was a good team win." Gladstone will face Westwood in the district semifinals Saturday at 12:00 in Negaunee. The Patriots edged Calumet, 2-1, in another quarterfinal game on Thursday. DIVISION FOUR DISTRICT AT NORWAY---Four district softball tournament games were played at Marion Park in Norway on Thursday. Bark River-Harris beat Painesdale-Jeffers, 11-6; Norway topped Baraga, 14-1; Lake Linden-Hubbell blanked Stephenson, 14-0; and Ishpeming shut out Ironwood, 11-0. The district semifinals and finals will not be played on Friday as planned. The games in Norway have been postponed until Monday due to weather concerns. |
