Eskymos Roll To Softball Title; Braves Eliminated

The Escanaba High School softball team dominated the Division Two regional tournament on Saturday in Cadillac, beating Fremont, 11-3, and then blanking Cadillac, 7-0, to win the championship.

Meanwhile, Gladstone's twelve-year reign as D-3 regional champions came to an end as the Braves beat Tawas, 7-0, but lost to Traverse City St. Francis, 5-2.

Michelle LaFave hit a two-run homer and Sam Connor had a RBI double to key the Eskymo offense. Escanaba (27-8) faces Frankenmuth in the D-2 state quarterfinals Tuesday at Central Michigan University. Game time is set for 1:00.

For Gladstone, Jenna Steinhoff was outstanding in the circle as the Braves beat Tawas in the D-3 semifinal. Tasi Martinez hit a three-run homer to pace the Gladstone offense.

In the championship game, Gladstone got an RBI double from Lexi Hongisto in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over St. Francis. The Braves had runners at second and third with no outs in that inning, but could not score again. Steinhoff and Bre Winling alternated in the pitching circle, inning by inning. Gladstone finished 25-15-2.

In the Division One Regionals at Saginaw Valley State University, the Marquette Redettes lost a semifinal match to Lapeer, 2-1. Midland eventually won the D-1 regional championship.

In the Division Four Regionals in Pellston, the Rapid River Rockets season ended with a 12-5 loss to Indian River Inland Lakes. The Norway Knights also had their season come to an end, 10-0, to defending state champion Rogers City.

Rapid River finished with a 22-11 record.

But Rogers City became the second defending state champion to be elimated (Gladstone was the other) later in the day, 5-1, to Indian River Inland Lakes.
