Better Late Than Never: Eskymos Roll Past Chiefs

WELLS---The game started 52 minutes late, but the Escanaba Eskymos were right on time Sunday with an 8-0 win over the Cheboygan Chiefs Sunday afternoon in Wells.

Garth Wickham scored another hat trick, and Dylan Gauthier and Paul Carne each added two goals for the Eskymos. Jack Valentine stopped 14 shots for the shutout.

The game started late because of miscommunication on the faceoff time with the officials, but once the game started, the Eskymos struck early as Gauthier rifled a shot top shelf to open the scoring.

Later in the period, Wickham cashed in on a 2-on-1 rush that was created by Hunter LaMarch. It was 2-0, and the shots were 13-6 after one.

In the second period, the Chiefs were on the power play, but Blaine Borman made a nice play winning a one-on-one battle and leading a rush up-ice.

Chris LeMire scored the shorthanded goal to make it 3-0 just 2:48 into the second period.

It appeared that Cheboygan scored a goal as Josh Stempkey blasted a high shot from the top of the left circle. The goal light went on, but it was ruled a "no goal".

Midway through the period, the teams were skating 4-on-4 when Carne, known for his defensive play, cruised in and scored from the left wing to make it 4-0.

Four minutes later, Carne scored again, this time on the power play, with Wickham drawing the assist.

That 5-0 score was the tally after the second period, with shots on goal reading 26-10 in favor of the Eskymos. And the third period got even worse for Cheboygan, which appeared to be tired after making the long trip to Houghton Saturday to play Jeffers.

Wickham scored again 37 seconds into the third period with Colton Hayes assisting, and then midway through the period, Gauthier was alone in front of the net and scored off a nice feed from Charlie Zuidema. Carne also got an assist for his third point.

Then, late in the game, it was icing on the cake for the Eskymos. Valentine got the puck in front of his own goal and passed to Brendan Sliva. Sliva  then found Wickham coming up ice, and Wickham completed his second hat trick in as many games.

The goal with 1:38 left in the third period ended the game on the mercy rule, 8-0.

Escanaba outshot Cheboygan, 37-14, with Chiefs sophomore goalie Carl Bartholomew making 29 saves.

The Eskymos kept Cheboygan forward Adam Jeannotte off of the scoreboard. Jeannotte led the state in scoring with 34 points in 11 games coming in.

Escanaba improved to 8-3-0 on the season. Cheboygan is now 7-5-0.

The Eskymos wrap up their four-game homestand next Friday and Saturday as a team from Ontario, Canada comes to town.  The games with Central Algoma Secondary will be played Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday afternoon at 1:00.

Friday's game will be broadcast on WGKL-FM (105.5) and WCHT-AM (600). Saturday's game will be broadcast on AM-600. Both games will be streamed live on rrnsports.com.

CHELSEA SHOWCASE SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED: The Escanaba Eskymos will play three games at the Michigan Public High School Hockey Showcase in downstate Chelsea at the end of January. Escanaba will face host Chelsea (Thur. 1/28, 6 p.m.), Romeo (Fri. 1/29, 2 p.m.), and Berkley (Sat. 1/30, 12:00 noon).
