Third Period Goals Lift Romeo Over Escanaba, 5-3

CHELSEA, Mich.---Now the Escanaba Eskymos know how their opponents felt last year when Levi Wunder scored almost at will on the way to a 92-point season.

There's a boy playing for the Romeo Bulldogs who also scored 92 points last season. And unlike Wunder, who has graduated and is playing junior hockey in western Canada, this boy is still around, and is making a name for himself in Michigan high school hockey.

Remember the name Logan Jenuwine. He wears #91 for the Romeo Bulldogs, and he scored two highlight-reel goals Friday to help the Bulldogs to a 5-3 win over the Eskymos at the Michigan Public High School Hockey Showcase at Chelsea's Arctic Coliseum.

Jenuwine's linemate, Nick Blankenburg, also scored twice as Romeo improved its record to 17-1-0 on the season. With the loss, Escanaba fell to 13-5-1 on the season.

Even though they were up against a Mr. Hockey candidate, the Eskymos hung in there as they played a state-ranked team for the fourth straight game (Marquette, Calumet, Chelsea, Romeo). In fact, the second period totally belonged to the Eskymos as they rallied from a two-goal deficit for the second straight game.

Romeo scored the first goal midway through the first period when Blankenburg capped off a 2-on-1 rush with Jenuwine. The Eskymos tied the game on the power play two minutes later on an unassisted Charlie Zuidema goal.

Goaltender Jack Valentine made a great glove save to rob Jenuwine a few moments later, but Romeo ended the period on a roll.

Jenuwine ripped one past Valentine for an even-strength goal with 3:27 left in the period, then Brett Lanski slipped one through the five-hole with 1:11 left to make it 3-1. But the Eskymos did not roll over.

Dylan Gauthier, playing in the rink where he suffered a life-threatening leg injury four years ago as a freshman, scored with 5:57 left in the second period off a nice pass from Hunter LaMarch. Then, that "third line" came through again as Gavin Schwalbach scored the tying goal with 1:33 left.

The Eskymos had done a nice job of staying out of the box, much to the chagrin of the Bulldogs players, who c onstantly complained to the officials about the lack of penalty calls. Finally, with 11 seconds left in the second period, Nick Aird was called for interference. And while Romeo's Jake Petri took a tripping penalty early in the third period, the Bulldogs struck on the 4-on-4 with their two star players scoring.

Blankenburg went right around the Eskymo defense for an unassisted goal at the 1:19 mark, and then Jenuwine scored the prettiest goal of the season at the 4:06 mark.

On that play, Jenuwine also went around the Eskymo defense, using a sweet toe-drag. Then he double-deked a helpless Valentine, going from his forehand to his backhand.

Escanaba still wasn't done, however, as the hardworking Jack Williams blocked a shot and went in on a clean shorthanded breakaway. Bulldog goaltender Nolan Kare stopped him, and the Eskymos never threatened again.

In other Showcase action, Marquette defeated Lake Orion, 5-1, Friday night. Read the story and see photos, videos, in a separate story on this web site.

Escanaba wraps up its Showcase appearance with a game against the Berkley Bears on Saturday afternoon. Game time is 12:00 noon. The game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
