Upper Peninsula Wrestlers Advance To State Finals

The Michigan High School Athletic Association held its individual wrestling regional tournaments on Saturday, and 27 Upper Peninsula boys placed in the top four in their weight classes and will wrestle in the state finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

In Division Two at Imaly City, Marquette's Beau Caster won the regional championship in the 152-pound weight class. Sault Ste. Marie's Chase Bouschor won the regional title in the 285-pound class. Escanaba's Mohammed Hoque was third in the heavyweight class, and will be the only Eskymo to wrestle at the Palace.

In Division Three at Remus, five Gladstone Braves wrestlers qualified for the Palace. Two of them won regional championships: freshman Adam Bruce at 130 pounds, and Zach Bailey at 285 pounds. Two Braves had to face each other in the 160-pound weight class, as James Bruce defeated Austin Demeuse on an 8-1 decision. James Bruce finished second and Demeuse third. And in the 145-pound weight class, Gladstone senior Bobby Beauchamp finished fourth and qualified for the Palace for the fourth straight year.

Also in Division Three, Iron Mountain's Aaron Bolo finished second and qualified for the state finals. Menominee's Ian Brown qualified in fourth place in the 135-pound weight class. And two Kingsford Flivvers qualified: 140-pounder Seth Collins (second place), and 135-pounder Trevor Povolo (second place).

In Division Four at Rogers City, fifteen Upper Peninsula wrestlers qualified for the Palace, although none of them won regional championships. The results:

160: Tanner Gonzalez, Manistique, second place.
171: Tyler Labadie, Bark River-Harris, fourth place.
189: Hunter Sadler, Munising, second place.

215: Landon Burton, Manistique, second place.
215: Hunter Collins, Newberry, fourth place.
285: Ryan Johnson, Gwinn, second place.
285: Robby Broeders, Bark River-Harris, third place.
285: Trent Deans, Westwood, fourth place.
