Sadler Ends Wrestling Career On State's Big Stage

AUBURN HILLS---When Munising High School senior Hunter Sadler went on to the mat for the state championship match Saturday night at the Palace of Auburn Hills, he knew he was wrestling for the last time. And not just in high school, either.

Sadler faced Springport's Nick Cooper in the 189-pound Division Four state final, and was pinned in one minute, 49 seconds. It was a sour ending to a great tournament run for Sadler, but you wouldn't know it by talking with him after the match ended.

Sadler didn't pout. Instead, he thanked everyone for their support, and took what he hopes will be the first step toward a career as an electrician. Yep, one of the best wrestlers in the state, with more than 100 varsity wins at two schools, is hanging it up.

"I don't plan to wrestle much in college or anything like that," Sadler said in an interview with RRN Saturday night. "I want to apply for an apprenticeship. I want to be an electrician."

"That's where I'm hoping to go. As far as wrestling goes, I'll be in practice rooms here and there, and try to make everybody else better, so that they can get to where I got, and maybe even better."

To be sure, Sadler wanted to go out with a state championship. So, what happened?

"He (Cooper) was running a move on me, the chicken wing," Sadler said. "I tried to roll it through, and that's kind of one of those things where you either get it, or you don't. If you don't, you're going to be in a bad spot. And that's kind of where I ended up there."

Sadler's run to the state championship match has captivated the Munising community, where people at the Corktown Bar were watching on Saturday. When Sadler wrestled in the semifinals Friday night, people in attendance at the Munising-Rapid River girls basketball game were watching Sadler on their smart phones. And cheering loudly.

"I thought that was awesome," Sadler said. "I saw pictures and videos of that, and saw that everybody was supporting me. that was really good."

And while Sadler is a part of 'Stang Nation, but he is still fondly remembered in Escanaba, where he was an Eskymo his freshman and sophomore years in wrestling. "I have had so much support from Escanaba," Sadler said.

And what about the fact that his final wrestling match was on the big stage at the Palace?

"It's the way to go out," he said.

In all, there were 28 Upper Peninsula wrestlers competing in the state finals this weekend, and eight of them made the podium by finishing in the top eight in their weight classes. Involved in consolation matches were: Trevor Povolo (Kingsford), Zach Bailey (Gladstone), Beau Caster (Marquette), Tanner Gonzalez (Manistique), Mohammed Hoque (Escanaba), Aaron Bolo (Iron Mountain), and Chase Bouschor (Sault Ste. Marie).
