Eskymos Upset Kingsford; Braves Fall In Houghton

The Escanaba Eskymos advanced to the Class B girls district championship game with a surprising 49-42 win over the Kingsford Flivvers Wednesday night. At the same time, the Gladstone Braves led for most of the night in Houghton, but lost at the end, 54-50.

ESCANABA 49, KINGSFORD 42---In Kingsford, the Eskymos were the underdog after finishing last in the Great Northern Conference, and with a regular season record of 5-15. But Escanaba had already upset Kingsford once, and the girls turned the trick again Wednesday night. Haile Waters and Jeny Brant both led the Eskymos with 12 points. Maddy Willis added ten points and Emily LaFave contributed eight. The Flivvers got 12 points from Renee Roberts and 11 from Hannah Carlson. Kingsford finishes with a 12-10 record.

HOUGHTON 54, GLADSTONE 50---In Houghton, the Braves got off to a good start behind the hot shooting of Leigha Woelffer, and they were eight minutes away from upsetting the defending district champions. But Gladstone was held to just one point for most of the fourth quarter and the Gremlins posted the come-from-behind win. The Braves led, 45-38, late in the third quarter, and 45-40 entering the final quarter. Houghton's comeback was fueled by Harley Froberg, who led all scorers with 25 points. Sloane Zenner contributed 13 points for the Gremlins, who improved to 15-6 with the win. Woelffer had 15 points and Taylor Hunter scored 13 for the Braves. Gladstone finishes its season 11-9.

Houghton's comeback spoiled what would have been a district championship game between Escanaba and Gladstone in Gladstone. Instead, the Eskymos will travel to Houghton for Friday night's district final. Game time is 7:00.
