Four Games Open Hermansville Gold Medal Classic

HERMANSVILLE---The Gold Medal Classic  Independent Basketball Tournament began Friday night at the Hermansville Community Center. It is the 79th year for the event, which makes it the longest independent basketball tournament in the country.

Why do people keep coming back to this small Menominee County town?

"I think the environment, with the smaller gym, you're back into Indiana Hoosiers basketball," Tournament Director Ray Bray said. "They don't have to be in the greatest condition because the floor isn't that long. It seems like when they shoot, everything goes in, so everybody likes to shoot!"

He says that the area has become a basketball hotbed in the wake of the North Central Jets winning three straight high school Class D state championships.

Four games were held Friday night and ten more games are scheduled on Saturday.
