Hermansville Gold Medal Hoops Classic Wraps Up

HERMANSVILLE---The 79th annual Gold Medal Classic basketball tournament wrapped up Sunday with more than 12 hours of continuous action inside the Hermansville Community Center.  The tournament has been going for the past nine days, with just one day off for the NCAA men's basketball national championship game.

The afternoon schedule was highlighted by two Class A men's games, between Carney Juice Promotions and Saginaw Beat N Skeet; and between Crystal Falls McNeil Oilers and Powers Sidetrack.

In the second game, the two top players from the North Central Jets' recent state championship run...Jason Whitens and Dawson Bilski...suited up for the Oilers.

SUNDAY'S GOLD MEDAL CLASSIC CONTESTS
Class B semifinal: Gladstone High School senior Joe Gibbs scored 35 points to lead Escanaba Oven King Pizza to an 83-80 win over Jim's Plumbing of Wallace. Carney-Nadeau High School senior Hunter Eichhorn...and Casey Wilson...each scored 24 points for Jim's Plumbing.

Class B semifinal: Curt Schomer scored 15 points as Lee's Greenery of Powers defeated Bloniarz Fams of Bark River, 58-54. Mid Peninsula High School and Northern Michigan University graduate Brett Branstrom scored 15 points for Bloniarz.

Class B Championship Game: Powers Lee Greenery defeated Escanaba Oven King Pizza, 77-59. No details of this game were reported.

Class A Game #1: Carney Juice Promotions 92, Saginaw Beat N Skeet 83---Kingsford High School graduate Geoff Smart scored 36 points and Jason Boucher added 20 for Juice Promotions. Tourcan Villolovos scored 30 points and Bryan Jackson added 18 points for Saginaw.

Class A Game #2: Crystal Falls McNeil Oilers 76, Powers Sidetrack 58---Michigan Tech graduate Matt Curtin scored 25 points to lead the Oilers to the relatively-easy victory. NCA seniors Dawson Bilski and Jason Whitens added 19 and 15 points, respectively. The Sidetrack team had three players score in double figures: Everette Laye of UW-Marinette had 16 points, NCA graduate Travis Vincent had 15, and Corlon Dvis added 13 points.

Class A Championship Game: Carney Juice Promotions 87, Crystal Falls McNeil Oilers 86---Juice Promotions raced to a 17-point lead before the Oilers rallied in the final minutes. NMU and Mid Pen High School graduate Brett Branstrom scored 27 points while Kingsford High School graduate Geoff Smart added 24 for Carney. For the Oilers, Bryce Bilski scored 26 points and Jason Whitens added 24.

Junior High 'B' Championship: Wallace Jim's Plumbing defeated Stephenson Wangerin Trucking, 51-37, in the day's first game.
