OVERTIME THRILLER: Notre Dame Stops NMU

SOUTH BEND, Ind.---The Northern Michigan University hockey team went toe-to-toe with the defending national runners-up Tuesday night, but the Notre Dame Fightin Irish got an overtime goal to beat the 'Cats, 2-1, in South Bend.

Cal Burke scored the overtime winner for Notre Dame.

It was a scoreless game for nearly all of the first period, but Notre Dame managed a late goal with less than a minute remaining in the opening period.

The Fighting Irish outshot the Wildcats on-goal in the first period, 10-7, but NMU blocked 10 shots defensively and killed a Notre Dame power play opportunity.

Junior forward Darien Craighead (Surrey, British Columbia) connected on the power play goal for his sixth of the season, tied for the team lead.

Junior defenseman Philip Beaulieu (Duluth, Minnesota) and senior forward Troy Loggins (Huntington Beach, California) both picked up assists on the score for their ninth and sixth of the season, respectively. After the Fighting Irish netted a goal with less than a minute to play in the first period, the Wildcats found a last-minute goal of their own in the second period. After killing a pair of penalties defensively during the second period, NMU connected on their first power play chance of the period with 21 seconds to play.

The third period was a battle between the Fighting Irish offense and Wildcat defense. Notre Dame outshot NMU 15-3, but the Wildcats shutdown the high powered-offense and killed three penalties in the period. With neither team able to break the tie, the game went in to overtime after 60 minutes of action.

For the first time this season, NMU had to play extra hockey to find a result. They had plenty of success a season ago finishing the season undefeated in seven overtime contests.

After a penalty call against NMU just 36 seconds into the overtime period, Notre Dame connected on a power play goal 30 seconds later to seal a victory. The Wildcats will now turn the calendar to December and focus on Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.

Senior goaltender Atte Tolvanen (Vihti, Finland) had another strong outing recording 30-plus saves for the 37th time in his career. He made 15 stops in the third period and finished the game with 33 to bring his season total to 389.

That total leads the WCHA and is second-most in the NCAA this season. Tolvanen also owns a .920 save percentage and 2.28 goals against average.

Sophomore forward Joseph Nardi (Edmonton, Alberta) led the Wildcats with three shots on-goal for the game while five others attempted a pair. The NMU defense held the Notre Dame power play to just 1-7 and blocked 23 total shots. Sophomore defenseman Robert Fosdick (Brookfield, Wisconsin) blocked six shots to lead the team and Loggins had four.

After their final non-conference matchup of the season on Tuesday, the Wildcats will return to Western Collegiate Hockey Association on December 7 when they host archrival Michigan Technological University in the Berry Events Center. Puck will drop at 7 p.m. in the Berry Events Center while the game will also feature a "Teddy Bear Toss".
