Comeback Kids! Eskymos Rally For Another Win

ESCANABA----The Escanaba High School volleyball team might be picking up where the Escanaba Little League All-Stars left off just a couple of weeks ago.

While the Eskymo volleyball team won't be making a World Series trip, the girls have shown some of that "never give up" mentality that the community loved about the Little Leaguers. For the second straight night, the Eskymos rallied from two sets down to win a volleyball match. This time, it was a 3-2 win over the Negaunee Miners.

Escanaba Eskymo senior Alliyah Edwards.
Escanaba had lost the first two sets to Manistique and rallied to win Monday night, it didn't look like that would happen in Tuesday night's home opener.

That's because the Eskymos were disappointed in the second set when they had a 17-13 lead, but they couldn't hold onto it.

A couple of communication problems caused the Eskymos to fall, 25-23, in that second game, after the girls lost the first set to the Miners, 25-20. But the Esky girls came out strong to win the third game, 25-17, and the fourth set was tense.

It went down to the wire before the Eskymos pulled it out, 26-24, to tie the match at two sets apiece.

Escanaba got off to a quick start in the fifth game, taking a 3-0 lead, forcing a Negaunee timeout. The Miners used another timeout when the Eskymos took a 10-4 lead, but the momentum was against the visitors by that time and the Eskymos posted the win.

Escanaba (2-5) opens the Great Northern Conference Thursday night in Menominee.

The Eskymo junior varsity team swept the Miners, 3-0, in Tuesday's JV match.
