Braves Preparing For Baseball; Lauschers To Coach

GLADSTONE---It may be the middle of football and volleyball season, but the Gladstone High School baseball program is making preparations for its inaugural season.

One big step was taken Monday with the official hiring of Don Lauscher as the head coach of the Braves team. Lauscher is returning to coaching after a one year hiatus.

He coached the Escanaba Eskymos for five seasons, and left as the winningest coach in Eskymo baseball history with a record of 130-27. Lauscher will have plenty of help on the sidelines, as his son Kurt and nephew B.J. will serve as assistant coaches.

Kurt Lauscher played ball at Grand Rapids Community College and at Central Michigan University. B.J. Lauscher played college ball at Saginaw Valley State.

Steve Towns, who helped Lauscher as an assistant coach while both were in Escanaba, will offer some assistance as a volunteer coach.

Don Lauscher says he's "excited to be coaching again in Gladstone", after he successfully coached the Gladstone Indians American Legion team in 2005 and 2006. That talented '05 team made it to the state finals in downstate Adrian.

Lauscher will inherit a young but talented Braves team in 2013. He  realizes that it will be a challenge, but he added, "I love challenges".

Some of the kids who hope to play on the first Braves team are happy about the arrival of high school baseball in Gladstone.

"I'm excited," said Braves junior Sam Pouliot, who has not played baseball for a couple of years. "That was great news over the summer. I'm definitely looking foward to that."

"I am excited more than anybody I know right now," Braves senior Luke LaCosse said. "It's gonna be a lot of fun."

And what about playing for Lauscher, who has a reputation of being a strict coach, but one who is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of baseball?

"He takes an average player, and he will make you a good player," LaCosse said.

"He's a tough coach, but he's a good coach," Braves senior Blake Ballard said. "I'm so excited."

For his part, Don Lauscher says that his goal is to be there for the kids, and to make the Gladstone Braves a "top-notch" program.

The Gladstone Braves team will be self-funded, which means that no money comes from the school district to the program.

The Gladstone High School Baseball Boosters has the goal of having two seasons' worth of money on hand by the time the first pitch is thrown out in April of 2013.

If anyone knows about fundraising, it's Lauscher.

While in charge of the Indians Legion program, he and a small group of volunteers spearheaded a campaign that raised enough money to install lights on the Don Olsen Field.

Gladstone became just the fourth baseball field in the U.P. to have lights (Escanaba, Menominee, and Ishpeming are the others).

The Baseball Boosters will hold its next meeting this Wednesday night at 6:00 at the Gladstone City Hall. The team has set up a web site at www.ghsbb.weebly.com and there's also a Facebook page at "Gladstone High School Baseball".

Also, a 5K walk and run fundraiser will be held on October 27th. Click the team's web page for more information and to register for the event.
