The meet featured seven matches, as the Marines forfeited most of the lower weight classes, as well as the heavyweight match. Those forfeits, combined with pins by Escanaba’s Trent Turchin, Tor Spets and Jarret Olsen were enough to lead the Eskymos to the victory. Two of Escanaba’s wins were come-from-behind efforts, as Spets, a foreign exchange student from Sweden, and Olsen, both trailed on the scoreboard. But Spetz came back to flip Caleb Dalhen to get the pin at 2:36 of the 160 pound match, and Olsen did the same at 189 against Jaxson Smith to get the pin at 3:18. “They made it a little exciting there, but they came back and got the pin for us,” Wright laughed. For Marinette, 152-pounder Jonny Bieber pinned Escanaba’s Tommy Neumann in 1:23, and 215-pounder Logan Paris pinned Esky’s Hunter Portillo in 1:05. And at 145 pounds, Marinette’s Josh Walker pinned Esky’s Caden Smith in 1:24. Escanaba’s Trent Turchin collected a pin over Shayla Diaz in 1:03. Marinette’s Isaiah Walker outlasted Escanaba’s Adam Reimer on a 10-2 decision. In later matches, Escanaba defeated Bark River-Harris, 48-33, and BR-H topped Marinette, 45-36. We’ll post details on those matches, and pictures and videos, Thursday evening. |
