GLADSTONE----The Gladstone High School girls basketball team outscored Iron Mountain, 14-6, in the third quarter and posted a 46-37 win in the MHSAA Division Three district tournament opener. The Braves beat the Mountaineers for the third time this season, and will now play Menominee in the district semifinals Wednesday night in Menominee. The Mountaineers didn't want a repeat of the previous two meetings when Claire Vanginhoven lit up the scoreboard. They concentrated their defense on her, but other Braves players stepped up, with Chloe Hanson scoring 13 points and Lu Martinez adding ten points. Vanginhoven ended up with eight points. Gladstone trailed, 9-7, after a sluggish first quareter, and were down 17-16 until they scored the final five points of the half to take a 21-17 lead at halftime. The Braves were in control for the third quarter, though, outscoring the Mountineers, 14-6, and taking a 35-23 lead going into the final eight minutes. "They started moving the ball around a lot faster," Iron Mountain Coach Karen Ellis said. "Our defense, they had some open shots that they shouldn't have had. Our defense was a little bit sluggish in the third. And we had an inury (to IM's only senior, Anslee Runsat) that effected the chemistry on the floor. And we stopped hitting our shots like I had hoped we would." The Braves defense was a big part of that, keyed by Jamisyn Bergeron. "I think we played really well as a team," she said. "We stayed together." Ellison Powell led the Mountaineers with a game-high 21 points. They finished their season with a 7-14 overall record. Gladstone, meanwhile, improved to 9-12. They will get another crack at top-seeded Menominee in the district semifinals Wednesday night in Menominee. |
