The Escanaba Cubs opened tournament play in Kimberly, Wis., on Friday, and faced a tough opponent right off the bat. The Cubs fell to Appleton Post 38, 10-0, at Sunset Park.

The Escanaba Junior Cubs swept an American Legion Baseball doubleheader from the Mid County Mavericks, 15-8 and 15-7, Sunday afternoon in Daggett. Andrew Miller and Storm Fournier combined to get the win on the mound in the opener, while Andrew Sedlar and Alex Ruatti pitched the second game. The Junior Cubs are now 8-0. The Gladstone Indians came oh so close to advancing to the championship game of the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament on Sunday....after getting a lot of help just to make the semifinals. Gladstone led top-seeded DePere, 5-3, in the seventh inning, but the Panthers rallied to beat the Indians, 6-5, in nine innings.

The Escanaba Cubs played five excellent innings of baseball against Midland Berrryhill on Saturday as the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament continued. But the wheels fell off in the sixth inning and the Cubs lost, 8-0. Later, in the win-or-else game against Chief Pontiac, the Cubs committed six errors and lost, 7-1. It was All-Star Saturday in St. Ignace as the Upper Peninsula's best high school senior basketball players competed in two All-Star games. Escanaba's Olivia Nash was the MVP in the girls game as the South beat the North, 80-72. In the boys game, Sault Ste. Marie's Steve Angeli was the MVP as the North won, 104-91. Gladstone Braves right fielder Katie Becker was named to the Division Three softball All-State team Wednesday by the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association. Becker led her team in batting and had flawless play in right field as the Braves advanced to the state championship game in Battle Creek. Three of her teammates were honorable mention All-State: first baseman Jammie Botruff, third baseman Nicole Sharon, and pitcher Tinner Sharon.

The Escanaba High School baseball team held its post-season banquet to celebrate a season that had its ups-and-downs. The Eskymos finished with a 21-14 record, which is the worst in school history. But the boys also won a district championship and have a solid foundation for the future with 11 freshmen and sophomores on the roster.

The Rapid River Rockets may have lost in the state softball semifinals last weekend, but four girls are being honored with spots on the Division Four All-State Team. Shortshop Ashleigh Monticello, second baseman Averi Kanyuh, first baseman Neena Brockway, and pitcher Heather Sanderson were all picked to the All-State team by the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association. The Rapid River Rockets got a complete game pitching effort from Heather Sanderson and overwhelmed the Bellaire Eagles, 10-0, in the MHSAA Division Four state quarterfinal Tuesday at Traverse City West High School.

Big news in Upper Peninsula high school football. Longtime Menominee Maroons Coach Ken Hofer announced his retirement on Monday. He won 320 games over more than four decades coaching at both Stephenson and Menominee, using the old single wing offense.
