MANISTIQUE----The Escanaba High School volleyball team has had a rough start to the 2012 season. The girls dropped all four matches at a tournament in Sault Ste. Marie, and then lost their first one-on-one match of the season to Iron Mountain.
So when they fell behind the Manistique Emeralds in two straight games Monday night, it would have been easy to throw in the towel and accept another loss. But the girls kept battling back, and turned the match into a marathon, and a come-from-behind win!
Escanaba won three straight close games to take the match, 3-2, in the Emerald City.
"Wow! What a night," Eskymo volleyball coach Bron Harmon said. "The teams were very evenly matched and both played with lots of heart. A great night of volleyball."
Manistique won the first two sets easily, 25-13 and 25-18. But the Eskymos regrouped to win the next two sets by 25-23 scores, setting up a battle to 15 points in the fifth set.
Escanaba started with the serve for the deciding set and the teams exchanged points to 13-13. Escanaba took the lead with a kill for point 14, and won the match on a shanked defensive play by Manistique.
The Eskymos will finally play a home match Tuesday night as the Negaunee Miners come to town. The varsity match should start at about 7:30.
