Gladstone Girls Cruise Past Big Bay DeNoc, 75-26
![]() GARDEN CORNERS---The Gladstone High School girls basketball team shook off a sluggish first quarter and pulled away from the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears, 75-26, Thursday night at the Big Bay deNoc Gym. ![]() "I think it went really well," Gladstone senior Kelsey King said. "I think we played with the intensity that we needed to come in with. We didn't slack off. We kept playing hard through the entire game. I really appreciate that from my team." Gladstone led, 14-8, after the first quarter as Bridget Becker scored seven points. Then in the second quarter, the Braves took command of the game, outscoring the Black Bears, 25-6, to take a 39-14 lead into the halftime locker room. Jessica Beaudry and Lexi Hongisto each scored eight points during that second quarter run. Then, in the third quarter, Gladstone scored the first ten points to expand the lead, and then imposed the 40-point mercy rule late in the quarter as Tinner Sharon scored eight points and Alexis St. Cyr added three field goals for six points. Hongisto led the Braves in scoring with 13 points. Beaudry added 12 and captain Callie Jensen scored nine points, on three three-point baskets. Sharon and St. Cyr each scored eight points as Coach Karl Dollhopf subsituted freely throughout the night. ![]() "I think that you go in assuming a win, so a lot of girls don't keep up the energy that they need to keep up," King said. "But I think that we did a really good job of keeping up the intensity that we play with every game." Sammi Sundling led the Black Bears (2-8) with ten points. She nailed a three-pointer at the beginning of the game to give her team its only lead of the night, 3-0. Gladstone's junior varsity team topped the JV Black Bears, 63-15. With the win, Gladstone improved to 7-5 on the season. The Braves travel to Negaunee for another non-conference game against the Miners next Tuesday night.
