Tight Defense Helps Braves Earn Win In Negaunee
![]() NEGAUNEE---The first quarter of Wednesday night's girls basketball game between the Gladstone Braves and the Negaunee Miners was a back-and-forth affair. Negaunee led, 14-12, after the first eight minutes of play. But from there, the Braves took control on defense and dominated the Miners over the final three quarters of the game. ![]() After the Miners took the lead into the second quarter, Gladstone's full-court press defense caused numerous turnovers. Alexis St. Cyr took advantage, scoring two baskets on lay-ups and getting to the free throw line on another occassion. Bridget Becker nailed a three-pointer during the second quarter and Jess Beaudry contributed three free throws during that Gladstone scoring spurt. That 14-12 Braves deficit became a 24-17 Gladstone lead at halftime. And the Gladstone girls weren't done yet, as they continued to make it tough for Negaunee to get good looks at the basket in the third quarter. The Braves got seven points off the bench from Lexi Hongisto and Callie Jensen drained a three as Gladstone outscored Negaunee, 16-3. After three quarters of play, the Braves held a 40-20 lead. In the fourth quarter, both teams subsituted freely. But the Miners still could not score, as Ashley Tresedder scored the only Negaunee basket of that quarter. Gladstone got ten points from Hongisto, nine from Becker, and eight from Jensen. The Braves host Sault Ste. Marie Saturday afternoon, before traveling to Kingsford next Tuesday night for a conference game. The Gladstone-Kingsford game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com. Thanks to Nate Bellville for taking the photos and videos that you see here. ![]() |
