WELLS----The Negaunee Miners hockey team finished winless this weekend at the Gil Versailles Memorial Tournament in Escanaba. The Miners lost on Saturday to the Tomahawk (Wis.) Hatchets in the third place game, 8-1.
Tomahawk's Luke Schoone had six assists in the game, in which the Hatchets outshot the Miners, 39-17. Sophomore Tyler Riutta took the loss in net for Negaunee.
The Miners return to Escanaba on Tuesday for a game against the Eskymos.
FRIDAY'S GAME: The L'AnsePurple Hornets scored three times in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and beat the Negaunee Miners, 5-2, Friday evening in the first round of the Gil Versailles Memorial Tournament in Escanaba.
Brett Hebert broke a 2-2 tie with a power play goal with 8:38 left in the third period to give the Purple Hornets the lead. That power play came after a five-minute major penalty was called on Negaunee's Nate Clisch for checking L'Anse's Max Maloney into the goalpost earlier in the period. Maloney was not seriously hurt. Clisch was ejected from the game.
Hebert had a goal and two assists for L'Anse. Zach Jager scored twice and Tyler Ponich had two goals and two assists for the Purple Hornets. Riley Thomson had two assists.
Negaunee got goals from Cody Wetton and Michael Farley. Miners goaltender Tony Moyle stopped 37 of 42 shots, as the Hornets had a 42-16 shots advantage.
