Rahoi Wins Title; Kadish Brothers 2nd In Gaylord

GAYLORD----Delta County's high school wrestling teams turned in a good showing on Saturday at the Northern Michigan Championships at the Gaylord High School.

Gladstone finished in fifth place in the 29-team event with 112 points. Escanaba finished sixth with 85.5 points. Gaylord won the event, with Roscommon second, St. Ignace third, and West Branch Ogemaw Heights in fourth place. Marquette ended up seventh.

For Escanaba, freshman Kaleb Rahoi was the 135-pound champion, beating Rogers City senior Evan Lamb on a 9-6 decision.

Eskymo junior Travis Heller also made the finals in the 152-pound weight class before losing a 9-7 decision to Gaylord's Trent Hunt.

For Gladstone, the Kadish boys both made it to the championship match in their respective weight classes.

At 140 pounds, Jeremy Kadish lost a tense 2-1 decision to Roscommon's Drake Leanadowski...a possible regional tournament preview. Moments later, Josh Kadish made the final match at 145 pounds, and lost to Sault Ste. Marie's Steven Kymes, 6-4.

Marquette's Curt Calovecchi won the 171-pound championship, with defending state champion Galloway Thurston of St. Ignace finishing third. Saints heavyweight Joe Ostman, also a defending state champion, won Saturday's tournament championship.

And St. Ignace's Richard Bentley won the 130-pound championship.

Escanaba's Zach Priebe finished fourth at 125 pounds, and Gladstone's Brandon Gagnon took fourth in the 160-pound weight class. Marquette's Rainger Rossway was third and Gladstone's Tommy Bailey waqs fifth in the heavyweight division.
