Freshman Bink Shines But Menominee JV's Escape

ESCANABA---It was more than 20 years ago when a boy named Nick Bink was under center for the Escanaba High School football program. He led the Eskymos to gridiron success, and became the starting quarterback at Northern Michigan University.

Well, fast-forward to October 3, 2013.

A kid named Nick Bink was on the field in the Orange and Black, and like his father, he was in the important quarterback position.

The younger Bink is just a freshman, but because of an injury to junior varsity quarterback Logan Lamb, Bink was on the field against the Menominee Maroons Thursday night.

Bink put on quite a show in his debut, but he and his Eskymos lost, 44-36.

Bink threw for three long touchdowns and scrambled 59 yards for another score on the ground. And he had another long TD pass called back because of a penalty away from the play during the fourth quarter.

Bink's favorite target was fellow freshman Chris LeMire, who caught a pair of passes that turned into 79 and 89 yard touchdowns. On both plays, LeMire made Menominee defenders miss as he made sharp cutbacks.

Unfortunately for LeMire, his 89-yarder was called back. Dan Van Effen also caught a long touchdown pass (63 yards) for the JV Eskymos.

Escanaba travels to Gladstone next Thursday night. You can listen to that JV game live on WCHT-AM (600) and on-line at www.rrnsports.com starting at 5:45 p.m.
