Eskymos Cruise Past Blue Devils; Big Challenges Next Weekend

WELLS---The Escanaba High School hockey team wrapped up a successful weekend on home ice Saturday with a 5-1 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils at the Wells Sports Complex. The Eskymos improved to 12-4-0 on the season, after also winning Friday night against the Kingsford Flivvers.

On Saturday, Eskymo senior Graham Johnson had a three-goal hat trick for the second straight day, giving him 31 goals and 14 assists for 45 points in 16 games.

Senior Nolan Bink had four assists for a playmaker-and-one, and fellow senior Carson Hughes scored the other two Eskymo goals to give him six on the season.

Johnson scored the first three goals of the game for the Eskymos, as they outshot the Blue Devils, 40-19. The Blue Devils only goal came off the stick of Jackson Sober, and a besieged goaltender Dane Vaught made 35 saves for the Soo.

Sault Ste. Marie fell to 7-9-0 on the season.

Cully Hayes stopped 18 of 19 shots for the victory.

Escanaba has two very difficult games next weekend in Traverse City.

The Eskymos will face the Hartland Eagles (10-2-0) on Friday, and the Flint Powers Catholic Chargers (10-3-0) in Saturday.

Hartland is a large Division One school, and in the latest poll. Were ranked No. 3 in the state in that division. Flint Powers is a Division Two school and were ranked No. 1 in the state in that division. Both the Eagles and Chargers were ranked in the Super Ten, which covers all classes. The Eskymos were the eighth-team in the small Division Three.
